About Dr. Canzoniero

I'm sorry to say I am no longer taking on new patients.

I have retired from the practice of
clinical psychology!

These days my joy is in writing novels that are half thrillers and half psychological studies of relevant
psychological issues in today's society.

Please see my Book page for my latest novels!

Quotes I like

I am a licensed psychologist with over thirty-five years’ experience counseling children and adults in my twin roles as both a school and clinical psychologist. I earned my doctorate from St. John’s University in Queens, New York, and became an adherent of family systems theory after working with clients, young and old, who were involved with drugs or growing up in families struggling with alcohol and drug abuse. I am passionate about helping people become aware that they can break out of their childhood roles and free themselves to make healthy choices.

My practice is in Shoreham, Suffolk County (LI), New York. I provide individual counseling for adults and children and do marital/couples relationship work. While my primary modality is Rational Emotive Therapy - which I firmly believe allows clients to solve their problems in a timely fashion - I also believe in the importance of developing understanding/insights into the root causes of problems.

Although I am now exclusively in private practice, I was employed as a senior school psychologist for thirty years and know intimately the issues children face attaining success both socially and academically in getting their education. I am very experienced in the process of getting students into and out of special education programs.

I have had a great deal of success with my clients on a one-to-one basis, but want to help more people by teaching some simple yet life-changing techniques. These include Rational Emotive Therapy and the development of insights. I want my clients to be fully equipped to continue creating positive change, something which I have translated in my publications and books.

My most recent book, Conditional Love - A Story of Battered Emotions, was borne of the belief I could best help people understand they are more than the roles they play in  life by telling a story of a man trapped in his role. I wrote this psychological thriller to embody the pain "adult children" of alcoholics (and of otherwise dysfunctional parents) often live with and to remind them that leaving their roles is a choice. You can read more about Conditional Love in the Books section of this website.

I love to deliver talks at conferences and seminars to help people notice any limited thinking they might have and teach them ways of thinking to support reaching their goals and ambitions in life.

I have been married to my wife, Dianne, for forty-five years, and we currently live in Shoreham, on Long Island, and are frequently surrounded by our tribe of four married children and eleven grandchildren. In addition to my interest in psychology, I also have a great love for baseball, scuba diving, and golf.
I am a member in good standing of the following professional associations:
The American Psychological Association
The New York State Psychological Association
The Suffolk County Psychological Association
